Promo Matchbook Notebooks

I wanted an item to help promote my shop besides business cards. A lot of people make samples of their items, but since that's sort of hard to do with journals, somebody on the forum suggested I make little matchbook notepads. They're fun to make and a great way to use all my little scrap pieces of decorative paper.

I'm going to be uploading some closeups on my flickr if you want to see them up closer. I'm going to keep making more once I gather more scrap paper. If you have a shop and need promo items for an event (or because you send out promo items with your order), please comment or convo me. I'm always looking for more places to give my promos out. I have business cards too I can give out. I don't really do craft fairs yet, and there's not a ton of places I have where I can offer my samples and/or business cards, so it really helps when other people are willing to give out samples and cards. :) I'm also thinking of doing the Little Black Box promo, I know it's pretty popular and helps people get exposure.

Today is the last day of the Team EFA Birthday Bash sale in my shop. You can get 20% off all items in my shop, so make sure to check it out and get some early holiday shopping done. I haven't got any sales from my EFA sale yet, so it'd make me really happy to get a sale today. Maybe sales aren't that effective on etsy?

I'm also running a little deal for my blog readers during the holiday season. From October 1 - December 31st, 2008, you can get 10% off any of my items if you enter the code "BLOG" in the message to seller box at checkout. ;)

I'll hopefully have time to work on some new items this week. I have an idea for a journal with decorative paper that kind of looks Halloween-ish (but isn't specifically Halloween themed so it wouldn't have to be just for Halloween). This weekend, I worked on some cards that encourage people to vote for the upcoming election. I think I'm going to list those starting tomorrow.

Tree of Life Box

I had my first custom order from TeneikM for a box made with the Tree of Life green swirl fabric I used on this journal. I had a lot of fun making it and I think it's the best box I've made (as far as getting it perfect and the dimensions right). You can see the listing here

I took some photos while making the box. Boxes are pretty easy to make, but the hardest part for me is getting the boards right and getting the edges smooth. The boards are gluing together with a weight in the center here. I used computer paper to let the board dry on which wasn't really smart, but it worked out fine (I was out of wax paper).

This is the box with the divider in the center without the fabric covering it :

Here's how it came out:

I hope she likes it. :) Custom orders are definitely something I hope to do more of in the future - it's nice that they feel personal and that you're making something specifically for someone.

Remember, there's a sale going on in my shop (20% off all items until September 30th). I don't know how else to promote my sale except in the forums and here. I forgot to mention in my last entry I have over 50 things listed now, which is the most I've had listed sofar. I listed a couple more Halloween cards (using the technique in the tutorial posted below). I will be adding more items gradually this week (I have a bunch of cards still to put up). I got some new bookbinding supplies and just cleaned out my craft area, so hopefully I'll have time this week to make some new journals.

Halloween Cards Tutorial

I decided to try something new today and write a tutorial. This is my first time writing a craft related tutorial. I got really detailed, but I think it's easier than it looks. Perfect in time for Halloween or your other holiday cards. If you use the tutorial, tell me what you think of it and/or post your results.

Halloween Themed Cards

What You Need (some materials are optional):
*Blank card stock or thick paper folded in half
*Watercolor paint (I used shimmer watercolors)
*Paint brush (medium sized)
*Newspaper and wax paper
*Paper weight or heavy book
*Stamps and ink
*Computer paper and printer
*Decorative paper
*Glue and scissors
*Markers, glitter, paint, decorations, etc.!

1) Get your blank card stock. You can do one at a time or if you're making a bunch, you can do a couple of similar cards at once to make it easier. Open your card/s flat and lay it on newspaper or some area where you can work.

2) Use watercolor on the background. I like to choose two different colors that are similar or go well together. On the Halloween cards, I used yellow and orange shimmer watercolor. Make diagonal strokes of watercolor with your paint brush. I started with a darker color on the bottom right corner and just worked my way across with the strokes, alternating between the two colors. The colors will make a nice blend if they overlap each other and you'll get different shades of color. If you're not using shimmer watercolor, you can add a little glitter or embossing powder while the paint is still wet to give it some sparkle.

3) Let the background dry (the good thing about watercolor is it dries really fast). Now comes the fun part of decorating. You can be really creative and original here. I started off drawing the design in pencil first. If you're not sure what to draw or how to draw something, google some images. In my example, I did a cat so I used the google image search to find a photo of cartoon cat just to make sure I drew everything accurately.

4) Color in or paint the image you drew. If you're using paint, I like to do lighter colors first because I think it makes it easier. I used watercolor paint on the colored parts of the cat - the collar and eyes. I then used a journaling pen (you can use a thin sharpie marker) to outline my details.

5) I traced over my image in black sharpie marker and then colored it in black, making sure to outline the watercolor details first. You don't have to stick to watercolor and marker. Use any materials you have available – colored pencils, paint of any type, markers, glitter, scraps of decorative paper, etc.

6) I wanted a little something extra, so I also used stamps on my cards. You can use any stamps you have. For my Halloween card with a witch hat, I used bat stamps to match the theme. For this card, I used pawprint stamps to go with the cat.

7) As I let the card dry, I work on the inside of the card. Usually you want just a nice, simple message and room to write a personal message. You can be as clever or witty as you like. For my Halloween cards, I googled popular Halloween sayings to get some ideas. In this card, I wrote "Don't be a scaredy cat." in a sort of Halloween looking font called Administrator Password. I also wrote “Happy Halloween!” in 28 Days Later font, bold. Print those sayings out and cut them out with scissors or a cutting board. You don't have to stick to a square, you can cut them out in fun shapes such as zig zag borders or waves.

8) I usually like to add a little decorative paper on the background of my sayings so it looks nicer. Find a decorative paper you think goes well with your card (or use colored construction paper) and cut out so it's slightly bigger than your saying. Glue to saying to your decorative paper. You can put the saying on the inside to make it a surprise when the person opens the card or put it on the outside if you think it looks better there (or both).

9) Now you just have to let your card dry. I find that my cards get bent out of shape a little when I watercolor, so you can wrap them in wax paper and put them under a heavy weight or book. Let them sit for a couple hours or overnight.

10) You're almost done. All you need now is to find an envelope that's the right size of the card. Usually when you buy card stock, they have the right size envelope to go along with it. For my card, I needed an A7 sized envelope. If you don't have an envelope or want to be more creative, you can make your own out of decorative or construction paper (if you used any decorative paper on your card, you can use that same decorative paper on the envelope to coordinate). Envelopes are pretty easy to make. If you open apart an envelope you're not using, you can use that as a pattern and copy the folds. That's it! :) You have your card and envelope.

Here's my result. This one is sort of dedicated to my black cat, Luna. :) I also ended up not keeping the face details because they ended up looking weird with the black background of the cat (a lot of card making is experimenting), so it's a silhoutte of a cat now.

Pet Lovers Black Cat Halloween Greeting Card

I also made this autumn leaves card to celebrate the start of autumn (this Monday), which uses a similar technique.

I'm going to be listing two more cards like this soon (one's a witch hat design and the other has some bats). If you don't make your own, you can always buy mine (now's a great time to buy because of my 20% off sale!(. ;)

EFA Birthday Coupon + Photoshoot

I did a photoshoot with a bunch of my cards yesterday. I don't have my light box here, but I set up a little photo area on my desk using my light and poster board.
It actually worked out really well. Here's a photo I took of it (you can see the two prints I ordered from etsy in the background):

I have a lot of cards I want to post, but I have a really slow internet connection at my college and it's really hard to upload photos of my items because it always times out. :( Does anybody with a slow modem have any tips for uploading photos? I usually just have to wait until I have a good connection, so hopefully I'll be able to get some new item posts soon.

I got my order of supplies - binder's board, decorative paper, glue, and a few other things - in the mail today. I was really excited to finally get them because I need the board to make a custom order and getting decorative paper is always fun. I also found some really cute "Vote" and political type stamps. I'm kind of broke right now, so I'm trying to decide if I should buy them or not to make a couple greeting cards encouraging people to vote.

I'm having a sale in my shop! It's part of the Birthday Celebration for the Etsy for Animals team. It's my first sale so I'm excited and hopefully it will encourage sales. :) Check out info below:

One Hundred Hearts

I (almost) have 100 shop hearts. It's really nice to see that a lot of people like my shop (even if they're not buying). In honor of reaching a milestone with my hearts, I decided to show off a couple items from my favorites.

These are some of the political items I have hearted recently. I just watched the SNL Tina Fey/Sarah Palin skit and it got me in a political mood. I haven't really decided how I feel about selling political items yet. I don't know if I want to offend anyone by only supporting one side, but I was thinking of making a couple of greeting cards with the Obama sign or just saying "Vote" on them to remind people to vote. I was also thinking of making little stickers. I actually was going to make them this weekend, but ran out of card stock and it got me thinking if I actually wanted to make them at all. Let me know what you think. :) Anyway, there are a lot of creative political items on Etsy:

Obama Buttons - I bought these Obama buttons. They are so fun. I love the heart shaped Obama sign and the one with the peace sign.

Eugene the Polar Bear - I love this polar bear. It's adorable just on it's own, but I thought it was interesting how they made a stuffed animal a political statement and it's so clever to use a polar bear. (I just checked on how many hearts this has and it has 47! That's probably the most I've seen an item have hearts.)

Hope Necklace Obama Fundraiser - Whether you're for Obama or not, this hope necklace has a great message and is really pretty. The owner is giving $30 to the Obama campaign if it sells, which is really generous and good to see people just aren't using the campaign to profit themselves.

Paris Hilton for President Bumper Sticker - I thought the commercial Paris Hilton did was hilarious and I love this bumper sticker inspired by it.

I was browsing Etsy for Animals and just found out that my cards (Pawprint and Pink Butterfly) were featured in two treasuries that celebrated EFA's birthday. I was excited to find that out, but I wish I noticed it sooner. I wonder if there's any other treasures I've missed?

I was also featured on the Cruelty Free Etsy team blog. It's a short interview that every new member does and explains why I use cruelty free products.

I worked on a bunch holiday themed cards this weekend and I will have them up soon. :) I made some cards for Halloween and worked on one for Christmas. I really like how they turned out and even wrote a tutorial for one. I have a custom box order too I have to make, so hopefully my supplies for that will get here soon.

New Cards and Teams

I've been working on a bunch of greeting cards lately (I haven't been working on journals because I don't have the supplies here in my dorm yet). A lot of them are Halloween themed. It's really weird for me to list Halloween/other holiday stuff this early (it's my first year with a shop during holiday season) because I'm usually the type of person who waits until the last minute to buy my gifts. Cards are fun to make though and I've been using a lot of watercolors. I also made some other themed cards, such as birthday and anniversary, so hopefully I'll get those up soon. Here's some photos of the process:

I also got a custom order for a box, using the fabric from this journal. I'm excited to make it.

I listed a new photo frame here. I did this photo frame a little differently than my other ones. Instead of building the frame myself, I started off with a wooden picture picture frame and covered it with decorative paper:

I took a bunch of photos of items a few weeks ago that I was slowly putting them up and that was one of the last of them. So soon, it will be brand new items.

I joined two new teams. One is called Cruelty Free Etsy and it's for shop owners who use cruelty free only products (I purposely don't use beeswax in any of my journals to keep them vegan). I also joined Etsy Greetings for my greeting cards. I feel like I'm in so many teams now, it's hard to fit all the team tags on my items. I love all my teams though and being involved in different communities. I got featured as one of the top entries in a back to school challenge at EtsyVeg for my Oversized Envelope journal. I'm so happy they chose one of my items. :)
