How do you know what to blog about? Make a list of topics you are knowledgeable about and are part of your daily life. Out of this list, you will want to choose a main theme for your blog. We will choose sub categories later. Right now, we just want a theme.
For example, I started a craft blog to promote my Etsy business. If you are passionate about food, maybe a cooking blog would be good for you. If you love fashion, maybe you would like to start a blog about designer clothing.
A personal or lifestyle blog is a good start, but it is even better if you pick a specific niche for your blog. A good example of a niche blog is Chocolate Covered Katie where she blogs about healthy desserts. This is a better than a general cooking blog, but the topic is more specific and you know exactly what you are getting when you go to her blog.
You want a niche that is specific enough to make your blog unique, but still popular enough to get you a loyal following.
You can always add personal stuff to your blog and expand your topics later. Here are some questions to ask yourself when choosing a topic:
Do you have an audience for your topic?
What makes your blog topic unique? Do you have a unique spin on the topic?
Could you make your niche even more specific to help you stand out?
What types of posts do you want to write on your blog? Can you think of lots of sub topics to write about?
Does your topic have long term appeal? Do you want to keep writing about this topic a year from now?
Once you ask yourself these questions, you should be able to find a good niche topic for your blog. If you are not sure yet on a specific niche, that is okay. Sometimes, it might take a little while to define what your blog is all about.
