Business: How to Run a Dog Sitting Business

Have you ever wanted to start your own dog sitting or walking business? To make extra money, I like to dog sit through the site DogVacay and by posting locally on Craigslist. Here are some tips for dog sitting if you want to get started:
  • Start with registering through dog sitting site like DogVacay or Rover. You can also post on Craigslist in your local area.
  • Decide what services you will offer. Do you want to do dog walking? What types of pets will you sit for? Will you pet sit in your home or their home? Also, decide on the prices such as $30/night for overnight boarding in your home. You can always change your prices later or raise your  price as you get more customers.
  • Include good photos of pets to help make your page or site look good. If you have a photo of you interacting with a dog, that is a good photo to use. If you have never dog say before, consider using photos of pets you have had or stock photos you find for free.
  • Get out there and promote your business! Craigslist is a great site to use to promote your business locally. You can also use business cards, print out flyers or use social media. Facebook pages allows you to create a local business page. Also, consider promoting on Yelp.
  • When you get dog sitting customers, be prepapred. Have their number, their vets info and any info you need. Have a backup of dog food, leashes, dog treats and other tools you might need.
  • When you have a dog, be sure to take care of it well and interact with it. Do not just let it sit in your home. Play with it and take it out often. Let other family members and pets interact with your visitor. Dog sitting is like a vacation for the dog so have fun with it and give it lots of attention
